Help on blending

Close this window

There is a difference between blended and non-blended series. For example the precipitation series for the Dutch station De Kooy consists of a blend of two original series:

  • Den Helder, with observations between 1 January 1851 and 31 July 1972
  • De Kooy, with observations between 1 April 1958 and present

These observations from two nearby locations can be merged seamlessly for climate change research. If you are interested in this overall series of precipitation at De Kooy from 1851 until present, choose blend. If you want the separate underlying series, choose non-blend.

For recent years (currently for at most 10 years) the series can be extended with synoptical messages (blended series only), provided that the synoptical stations (as well as other nearby stations) are within 12.5km distance and that height differences are less than 25m. More information can be found under Project info > ATBD.

The Reset all button brings you back to the initial selections.

The datasets that can be downloaded from the website make use of only the downloadable stations series. The derived ECA&D products such as indices of extremes or E-OBS make use of a blended dataset made from both the downloadable and non-downloadable station series, see our data policy. Therefore results created from the downloaded datasets might not necessarily be the same as those given elsewhere on this website.

The exact source of each observation in the downloaded blended series can be traced back from the first figure of the source ID (SOUID). A source ID starting with 9 indicates synoptical data, whereas 1 indicates participant data.
